Central air conditioning: Its efficiency and quiet operation make it a must-have for the Florida resident. However, anyone considering such a purchase is sure to have questions. The following answers should help.
A split system consists of an outdoor cabinet to house the condenser and compressor along with a separate indoor dehumidifier. For a home with existing hot-air central heating, this type may be the most economical.
The package unit, on the other hand, comprises a single cabinet that houses all three components. Installers normally site these on a concrete slab beside the home's foundation or, alternatively, on the roof. This setup routes the return ducts and air supply through the exterior wall.
When seeking an air conditioner, the savvy consumer will look for:
- Energy efficiency.
- Quiet operation.
- A variable-speed air handler.
- A temperature rating of 11.6 or higher.
- A fan-only switch for more-economical nighttime performance.
The proper size of any unit depends on the square footage of the building in question. Its correct calculation is imperative.
A unit that is too small for the space involved will be unable to remove enough heat from the air, but that won't stop it from trying. Such a unit will run continuously in a valiant attempt to get the temperature down.
An excessively large unit, on the other hand, will cycle on and off so frequently that it has no time to remove sufficient moisture from the air. This will result in a cold and clammy atmosphere that most will find extremely uncomfortable.
For an average residence with 8-foot ceilings, insulated attic and blinds or draperies on south-facing windows, 12,000 BTU of cooling power for every 500 square feet of living area should do the trick.
While it is always possible to warm the house with a furnace, a heat pump will do it more efficiently. Because it works by transferring heat from one location to another instead of by burning fuel, it will help keep the homeowner comfortable both physically and financially..
The earliest central air conditioners utilized a chlorine-heavy coolant known as R-22. Although this substance contributed mightily to ozone layer depletion, no governmental standards existed to restrict its use.
The January 2010 implementation of the Green Treaty changed all that. In the interests of environmental health, today's units cool with R-410A, a chlorine-free substance with no known adverse impact on the planet. Bryant uses a prorietary formula based from R-410A called Puron® with superior performance in Bryant air conditioners.
You may have seen the letters SEER on HVAC systems in your local home improvement emporium. The acronym stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and for anyone who cares to save on his electric bill, the higher that number, the better.
The SEER rating of most central air conditioning units on the market today will range from a low of 13 to a high of 21. Although a unit with a higher SEER will command a bigger purchase price, the lower electric bill that results from its increased efficiency will mitigate the original expenditure.
For example, while a less-expensive 3-ton 10-SEER model will generate an average electric bill of $648 a year, the more-expensive 20-SEER system of the same size will operate at half that amount. Over a 10-year period, the purchaser of the higher-SEER unit will have saved $3,240 in cooling costs.
Whether you're buying a new unit or upgrading an old one, the improved characteristics of today's central air conditioning systems should make you glad you did.
